01 · In plain English

TXA shows up in “dark spot” serums. Most of the strongest evidence is for something else.

02 · What it does

Tranexamic acid is thought to interfere with signals between skin cells and melanocytes. The strongest data are for oral TXA in melasma, which is a prescription medication with its own risks.

Topical products are a different situation; results from oral studies should not be assumed to transfer.

03 · What the evidence says

  • Oral TXA for melasma, under a doctor’s care.limited evidence
  • Topical TXA for uneven pigmentation.insufficient evidence

04 · Insufficient evidence

  • Topical TXA as a standalone fix for melasma or dark spots.

05 · Compatibility

  • Topical TXA is generally reported as well tolerated; patch test as with anything new.
