- 01A softer AHA. Good for dry, rough skin; still needs sunscreen.

Ingredient Receipt · Exfoliants
INCI: Lactic Acid
Lactic acid exfoliates like other AHAs but is often better tolerated, and it hydrates too. How it compares to glycolic acid and how to use it.

If glycolic acid stings, lactic acid is often the next suggestion. It’s an AHA with a larger molecule and some humectant properties.
Like other AHAs, lactic acid loosens surface dead cells. Its larger molecule tends to penetrate more slowly than glycolic acid, which is why many people find it gentler.
It’s also part of the skin’s own natural moisturizing factor, which is one reason it appears in moisturizers for very dry or rough skin.
“Gentle means you can use it every day at any strength.”
It’s still an acid. Higher strengths and daily use can irritate, and the sun-sensitivity advice for AHAs still applies.
