Elemis skincare: what's really in Pro-Collagen and the cleansing balm

Is Elemis skincare worth it? We read the ingredient lists of the Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, Marine Cream, Overnight Matrix, Dynamic Resurfacing Pads and Superfood Facial Wash and checked the claims.

01 · The short version

Elemis skincare is the British spa brand behind the Pro-Collagen line, and searches for it are up sharply in the US this week. Prices run from $44 for a facial wash to $260 for a night cream.

The marketing leans on marine algae, "Pro-Collagen" branding and clinical percentages. We read the full ingredient lists on the brand's US product pages and the small print under each claim. Here's what the best sellers actually contain, what they're likely to do, and who should skip them.

02 · Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm: a lovely oil cleanser with a lot of scent

The cleansing balm ($75 for 100 g) is the brand's best seller. It's built on sweet almond oil and light triglycerides, with elderberry, oat, wheat germ, borage (starflower) and jojoba oils, shea butter and plant waxes. Emulsifiers turn it into a milk when you add water, so it rinses clean.

As a first cleanse it does what an oil cleanser should: it dissolves sunscreen and long-wear makeup without scrubbing. The rich oils leave dry skin feeling soft rather than tight.

The catch is the scent. The list includes lavender, geranium, eucalyptus, chamomile, mint and clove oils, menthol, added fragrance and the fragrance allergens linalool, geraniol, limonene and citral. Essential oils are a known cause of contact allergy. If your skin is sensitive, or you plan to leave it on as a mask as the brand suggests, that's worth knowing before you buy.

03 · Does Pro-Collagen contain collagen?

Barely, and it wouldn't matter much if it did. Pro-Collagen Marine Cream lists collagen amino acids near the end of a long ingredient list, and the balm has cocoyl hydrolyzed collagen in a similar spot. Collagen molecules are too big to sink in and rebuild the collagen in your skin. On the surface, collagen fragments work as moisturizers.

The "Pro" refers to the claim that the formulas support your own collagen. The stars of the line are algae extracts: padina pavonica (a brown seaweed), chlorella and porphyridium. Seaweed compounds do hold water and show antioxidant activity in lab work, but there's little human evidence that these extracts firm skin on their own.

04 · Pro-Collagen Marine Cream: a good moisturizer at a steep price

Marine Cream ($150 for 50 ml, $99 for 30 ml) is the original Elemis product. Strip away the algae story and the base is water, glycerin, light emollients, dimethicone, shea butter and vitamin E. That's a well-made gel cream that will hydrate most skin types and sit nicely under makeup.

Elemis says it's clinically proven to reduce the look of fine lines in 14 days. The footnote says the trial was the brand's own, in 38 people over 4 weeks, and it isn't published. Moisturized skin does look smoother within days, because water plumps the surface lines, so the result is believable. It just isn't the same as rebuilding collagen.

There's no sunscreen in it. It contains fragrance plus linalool, citronellol, limonene and geraniol, and it has wheat germ oil, which a few people with wheat allergies prefer to avoid.

05 · Pro-Collagen Overnight Matrix: $260 of hydration

The Overnight Matrix ($260 for 50 ml) is a night gel-cream with glycerin, vegetable oil, squalane, sunflower oil, sodium hyaluronate, an extract of the microalga dunaliella salina, plankton extract and a peptide sold as "drone peptide technology" (palmitoyl sh-hexapeptide-13 serine sp amide).

The base is genuinely nice: squalane and hyaluronic acid are reliable for soft, hydrated skin. The peptide and plankton claims rest on the brand's data. A review of topical peptides found some promising results but mostly small studies, many run by ingredient makers.

The product page also cites two different trials (one from 2025 over 4 weeks, another from 2021 in 32 people over 2 weeks), neither published. It carries the same 9-oil scent blend as the balm, with camphor and menthol on top, which isn't ideal for reactive skin at night.

06 · Dynamic Resurfacing Facial Pads: a gentle exfoliant

The pads ($69 for 60) combine lactic acid with three protein-dissolving enzymes (papain from papaya, protease and subtilisin) and a probiotic ferment. Lactic acid is one of the gentler alpha hydroxy acids, and enzymes loosen the bonds holding dead cells on the surface.

That's a softer approach than glycolic or salicylic pads, and a good pick for dry or easily irritated skin that still wants smoother texture. Research on enzyme exfoliants is thin: a review found only 11 studies, few of them clinical trials, though the results were encouraging.

Elemis tells you to use one pad morning and evening. For most people, start with a few evenings a week, and wear sunscreen daily, since acids can make skin more sun-sensitive. The pads also contain fragrance.

07 · Superfood Facial Wash: a plain gel cleanser

The Superfood Facial Wash ($44 for 200 ml) is a gentle foaming gel based on sodium lauroyl sarcosinate and cocamidopropyl betaine, mild surfactants that suit oily and combination skin. The broccoli, kale, wheatgrass and pumpkin seed extracts sit well down the list, and in a product you rinse off in a minute, they won't do much.

It's a fine daily cleanser for skin that likes a foam. It contains fragrance and several citrus and herb oils, so it isn't the pick for sensitive skin either.

08 · How to use Elemis without overspending

  • Dry or mature skin: the cleansing balm at night, a plain fragrance-free moisturizer if you react to scent, and a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning. Sunscreen does more for lines than any cream here.
  • Rough or dull skin: the Dynamic Resurfacing Pads two or three evenings a week. Skip other acid or retinoid products on the same night until you know how your skin handles them.
  • Oily or combination skin: the Superfood Facial Wash, the pads a few nights a week, and a light moisturizer.
  • Sensitive, rosacea-prone or eczema-prone skin: most Elemis best sellers contain fragrance or essential oils. Patch test on your inner arm for a few days first, or choose a fragrance-free brand.
  • Shopping on a budget: buy one product you'll enjoy daily, like the balm. The Overnight Matrix and Marine Cream are pleasant moisturizers, but their key ingredients (glycerin, squalane, hyaluronic acid) are available for far less.

09 · The science

Most of what Elemis products do comes from well-understood ingredients. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid pull water into the top layer of skin, and oils, shea butter and squalane slow water loss. That's why skin looks plumper and fine lines look softer while you use them.

Lactic acid and enzymes weaken the bonds between dead surface cells so they shed sooner, which smooths texture. The algae extracts are rich in polysaccharides, polyphenols and amino acids that hold moisture and act as antioxidants in lab studies; whether they firm skin in real life hasn't been shown in published human trials.

10 · What might help

  • Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm for removing makeup and sunscreen without leaving dry skin tight.well-supported approach
  • Marine Cream and Overnight Matrix for hydration and a smoother look while you use them.well-supported ingredients
  • Dynamic Resurfacing Pads for gentler exfoliation and smoother texture.limited evidence
  • Algae extracts and drone peptides for firmer skin or rebuilt collagen.insufficient evidence

11 · Insufficient evidence

  • Any published, independent trial of Elemis products; the clinical claims come from the brand's own unpublished studies of 32 to 38 people.
  • Padina pavonica, chlorella or plankton extracts firming skin in people.
  • Topical collagen ingredients increasing the collagen in your skin.

The Receipt

  1. 01Elemis skincare is well-made, pleasant to use and built on basic moisturizing ingredients that work.
  2. 02"Pro-Collagen" is a brand name, not a collagen treatment. The firming claims rest on the brand's own small studies.
  3. 03The balm and the pads are the strongest buys. Skip the line if fragrance and essential oils bother your skin, and put the money toward sunscreen.

Education, not a diagnosis. If something changes quickly, hurts, bleeds, or worries you, see a dermatologist.

Questions people ask

Is Elemis skincare worth it?
The cleansing balm and resurfacing pads are well-formulated and popular for good reason. The Pro-Collagen creams mainly moisturize, and the anti-aging claims come from the brand's own unpublished trials, so you're paying a lot for texture, scent and the name.
Does Elemis Pro-Collagen actually contain collagen?
Only in tiny amounts. Marine Cream lists collagen amino acids near the end of its ingredient list, and the cleansing balm has hydrolyzed collagen. Collagen can't rebuild skin collagen from the outside; on the surface it acts as a moisturizer.
What is Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm good for?
It's an oil-based first cleanse that melts makeup, sunscreen and grime, then turns milky and rinses off. It suits dry and normal skin best. It contains nine essential oils and fragrance, so sensitive skin should patch test first.
Is Elemis good for sensitive skin?
Most of the best sellers aren't ideal. The cleansing balm, Marine Cream, Overnight Matrix, resurfacing pads and Superfood Facial Wash all contain fragrance, and several contain essential oils, which are common causes of skin allergy.
Does Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream reduce wrinkles?
It hydrates, which makes fine lines look softer within days. Elemis's claim of fewer visible lines in 14 days comes from its own trial of 38 people, which isn't published. It has no SPF, and daily sunscreen does more to prevent wrinkles.
Can I use Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Pads every day?
The brand suggests morning and evening, but most people do better starting with two or three evenings a week. They contain lactic acid and enzymes, so wear sunscreen daily and don't pair them with retinoids on the same night at first.
Is Elemis a luxury brand?
Yes. Elemis is a British spa and skincare brand sold in department stores and spas, with prices from about $44 for a cleanser to $260 for the Pro-Collagen Overnight Matrix.
