Collagen peptides

INCI: Hydrolyzed Collagen (topical); collagen peptides (supplements)

Collagen peptide searches are up sharply. What oral collagen and collagen creams can do, and why the evidence depends on who funded the study.

01 · In plain English

Collagen peptides are broken-down collagen, sold mostly as drinks and powders and sometimes in creams.

02 · What it does

Topically, collagen molecules are too large to rebuild skin collagen; hydrolyzed collagen works mainly as a film-forming moisturizer.

For supplements, a 2023 meta-analysis found improvements in hydration and elasticity. A 2025 meta-analysis of 23 trials found the same overall, but the benefit disappeared in studies without industry funding and in the higher-quality studies.
