01 · In plain English

Retinol is the classic “do-everything” active. What is realistic?

02 · What it does

Retinol is converted in skin to retinoic acid, which influences cell turnover and collagen. Prescription retinoids (e.g. tretinoin) have the deepest evidence; retinol has smaller trials.

03 · What the evidence says

  • Fine lines and texture in aging skin over months.limited evidence
  • Uneven tone as part of a longer routine.limited evidence

04 · Insufficient evidence

  • Encapsulated or “retinol alternative” claims of equal results without irritation.

05 · Compatibility

  • Start a few nights a week. Expect some dryness at first.
  • Avoid stacking with strong exfoliating acids on the same night.
  • Retinoids are generally avoided in pregnancy. Ask a clinician.
