01 · Key ingredients, honestly
Jackfruit extractTone
insufficient evidence
Extracts from the jackfruit plant slow tyrosinase, the enzyme behind pigment, in lab studies. We found no good human trials, so treat it as a supporting player.
Shiitake mushroom extractTone
limited evidence
Shiitake brings antioxidants and polysaccharides. Reviews of mushroom extracts in skincare are promising, but most of the research is in the lab.
Turkey tail mushroom extractAntioxidant
insufficient evidence
Rich in polysaccharides that hold water and calm the look of stressed skin. Evidence for skin tone is thin.
Sea fennel extractTone
insufficient evidence
Marketed as a gentle plant alternative for brighter-looking skin. Only a handful of studies exist, mostly from ingredient suppliers or the lab.
Gluconolactone (a PHA)Gentle exfoliant
limited evidence
A polyhydroxy acid. Its larger molecule moves into skin more slowly than glycolic acid, which is why it is usually better tolerated by sensitive skin. Helps smoother, more even-looking skin over time.
Draws water into the top layer of skin. One of the best-studied moisturizing ingredients there is.
Green tea extractAntioxidant
limited evidence
Green tea polyphenols are antioxidants with a decent body of lab and small human research. They support, but do not replace, daily sunscreen.
Chamomile and calendulaSoothing
limited evidence
Traditional soothing botanicals. Used to help the look of redness, though anyone allergic to the daisy family should patch test first.
Rice extractConditioning
insufficient evidence
Common in Japanese and Korean skincare for a softer, more even look. Little direct evidence.
Galangal root extractAntioxidant
insufficient evidence
A ginger-family root. A few lab studies look at its effect on pigment. Low in the formula.
Plain truth: most of these botanicals have lab data, not big human trials. For stronger evidence on dark spots, see our receipts on niacinamide, azelaic acid and tranexamic acid.
02 · Who it's for
Sensitive or easily irritated skin that does not get along with strong acids or kojic acid.
Anyone who wants a gentle step for the look of dark spots, post-blemish marks or uneven tone. See post-acne marks.
Not a fit if you are allergic to the daisy family (chamomile, calendula), or for melasma that needs a dermatologist's plan.
03 · What to expect
Skin renews itself slowly, so give any tone product 8 to 12 weeks of daily use before judging it. Results vary, and gentle formulas work more gradually than strong ones.
