01 · The short version

Short answer: cellulite is harmless dimpling of the skin over fat. Cellulitis is a bacterial infection of the deeper skin that makes an area red or discoloured, swollen, hot and painful. Cellulite is cosmetic. Cellulitis needs a doctor, usually for antibiotics.

The names sound alike, and the two can both show up on the legs, so they're easy to mix up in searches. Here's how to tell them apart.

02 · Side by side

  • Cellulite: dimpled, orange-peel texture. Same color as the rest of your skin. Not painful or warm. Usually on both thighs or buttocks. Builds slowly over years.
  • Cellulitis: a patch that is red, pink, purple or darker than the surrounding skin, swollen, warm or hot to the touch, tender or painful. Usually on one leg or one area. Appears and spreads over hours to days, often after a cut, bite, crack in the skin or athlete's foot.

03 · Get medical help if you notice

The NHS advises getting an urgent appointment for possible cellulitis, and emergency care if it's on the face or around the eye, is spreading quickly, or you feel very unwell. Don't treat a painful red patch with cellulite creams or massage.

  • A painful, swollen, warm patch of skin that is spreading.
  • Fever, chills, feeling shivery or unwell alongside a skin change.
  • Swelling or redness around the eye or on the face.
  • Red streaks spreading from the area, blisters, or skin that turns dark or numb.
  • Any of these if you have diabetes, a weakened immune system or swelling in your legs.

04 · If it's cellulite

Cellulite needs no medical treatment. If you want it to look smoother, caffeine creams have the best trial evidence of any topical: a 2% caffeine cream beat placebo on cellulite scores in a 2026 double-blind trial. Our Body Butter uses 2% caffeine in a shea and avocado base for twice-daily massage. See what cellulite is and how to get rid of cellulite on legs for the full plan.

05 · The science

Cellulitis happens when bacteria, most often streptococcus or staphylococcus, get in through a break in the skin and infect the deeper layers. Cellulite has nothing to do with infection: it's fat pushing up between connective bands under the skin.

06 · What might help

  • Prompt medical care and antibiotics for cellulitis.well-supported
  • Caffeine creams for the look of cellulite.Clinically studied

07 · Insufficient evidence

  • Home remedies for cellulitis in place of medical care.

The Receipt

  1. 01Cellulite is cosmetic. Cellulitis is an infection.
  2. 02Red, hot, painful, spreading skin needs a doctor, quickly.
  3. 03Cellulite creams are for dimples, never for a sore red patch.

Education, not a diagnosis. If something changes quickly, hurts, bleeds, or worries you, see a dermatologist.

Questions people ask

Is cellulite the same as cellulitis?
No. Cellulite is harmless dimpled skin. Cellulitis is a bacterial skin infection that causes red or discoloured, swollen, warm and painful skin and needs medical treatment.
Can cellulite turn into cellulitis?
No. They're unrelated. Cellulitis comes from bacteria entering a break in the skin, whatever the skin above the fat looks like.
What does cellulitis look like on the leg?
Usually one leg with a patch that is red or darker than normal, swollen, warm and tender, which can spread. Fever or feeling unwell can come with it. See a doctor promptly.
