How to get rid of cellulite on your thighs: what actually works

How to get rid of cellulite on thighs, honestly: what makes it look smoother at home, what the creams can and can't do, and which in-office treatments last longer.

01 · The short version

Short answer: you can't fully get rid of cellulite on your thighs at home, but you can make it look noticeably smoother. The best at-home mix is strength training for your legs, steady weight if you have fat to lose, and a caffeine body cream massaged in twice a day. For a bigger, longer-lasting change, in-office treatments that cut or release the bands under the skin work best.

Thighs are the most common spot for cellulite. Here's how each option stacks up.

02 · 1. Train the muscles under it

Cellulite sits on top of muscle. Firmer, fuller muscle in the thighs and glutes gives the skin a smoother base. Dermatologists at Cleveland Clinic recommend running, cycling and resistance training, and say it can take two to three months to see a change.

Good options: squats, lunges, step-ups, hip thrusts and deadlifts, two or three times a week. Add weight as they get easier.

03 · 2. Manage your weight, if it applies

In a study of women in medical weight-loss programmes, most saw their cellulite improve as they lost weight, especially those who started heavier and lost more thigh fat. Some, though, got worse as their skin became looser. Losing weight is worth it for health, but it isn't a guaranteed cellulite fix.

04 · 3. Use a caffeine body cream daily

Caffeine creams are cheap, easy, low risk and backed by double-blind trials. In a 2026 trial, a 2% caffeine cream lowered cellulite scores more than placebo over 12 weeks of twice-daily use on the thighs. In a 6-week study of a 3.5% caffeine cream, cellulite scores improved by 19.8% and thighs measured 0.7 cm smaller. Across seven controlled trials of cellulite creams, users lost about half a centimetre more off the thigh than with control creams.

Our skincarereceipt Body Butter has 2% caffeine with vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, avocado oil and shea butter. Apply it to the thighs twice daily and massage it in deeply. With regular use it visibly reduces the appearance of cellulite. Results fade if you stop, as with every cream.

Retinol body products are the other option with some data, but they need about six months of use.

05 · 4. Massage it in

Massage gives the skin a temporary plumped, smoother look, and a small study found three different massage techniques each took about half a centimetre off thigh circumference. Doing it while you apply your cream costs you nothing extra. See our cellulite massage how-to.

06 · 5. In-office treatments for bigger change

An injectable called Qwo was FDA approved for buttock cellulite in 2020, but its maker stopped selling it in 2022 because of heavy bruising.

  • Subcision, where a doctor uses a needle or device to cut the bands under each dimple. It targets the main cause and can last a long time.
  • Vacuum-assisted tissue release (Cellfina), an FDA-cleared version of subcision for thighs and buttocks.
  • Acoustic wave therapy and the 1440 nm laser, which had the best support in a large review of cellulite treatments, though evidence was still limited.
  • Radiofrequency and other heating devices, which give temporary smoothing and usually need repeat sessions.

07 · What to skip

  • Supplements and detox teas. The AAD says there's no evidence any supplement reduces cellulite.
  • Foam rollers and cellulite rollers as a fix. Fine for sore legs, but there's no proof they change cellulite long term.
  • Anything promising permanent removal in weeks.

08 · The science

Thigh cellulite forms where fat pushes up between vertical bands that tie the skin down. Exercise and weight change alter the fat and muscle. Creams and massage mostly change the surface for a while. Only treatments that release the bands change the structure itself.

09 · What might help

  • Leg and glute strength training, 2 to 3 times a week.limited evidence
  • Caffeine body cream massaged in twice daily.limited evidence
  • Subcision or vacuum-assisted tissue release in a clinic.limited evidence
  • Acoustic wave therapy.limited evidence

10 · Insufficient evidence

  • Supplements, cellulite teas and detox diets.
  • Cellulite rollers and massage guns for lasting change.

The Receipt

  1. 01Build muscle, keep weight steady, and use a caffeine cream for the surface.
  2. 02A caffeine cream visibly improves the look while you keep using it.
  3. 03For lasting change, the bands under the skin have to be treated in a clinic.

Education, not a diagnosis. If something changes quickly, hurts, bleeds, or worries you, see a dermatologist.

Questions people ask

Can you get rid of cellulite on thighs naturally?
Not completely. Strength training, a healthy weight and a daily caffeine cream with massage can make it look smoother. The bands that cause dimpling stay unless a clinic treatment releases them.
How long does it take to reduce cellulite on thighs?
Exercise takes about two to three months to show. Caffeine creams are usually judged at 6 to 12 weeks. Retinol needs around six months.
Does squatting get rid of cellulite?
Squats build glute and thigh muscle, which can make the skin above look firmer. They won't remove the bands that cause dimples, so expect improvement, not removal.
What is the fastest way to reduce cellulite on thighs?
In-office treatments such as subcision change things fastest. At home, massage gives a same-day smoothing look that lasts a few hours.
